The drive from Glennallen to Valdez was wonderful. Around every corner there was a surprise. I spotted the cow moose with a calf in the river, but couldn’t manage to get both in the photo. Above the tree line snow was much in evidence along the road, not just on the tops of the mountains.Worthington Glacier is quite impressive and I was fortunate to have a bit of sunlight on it.
Once in Valdez I checked out the dry camping sites then decided to splurge and get a spot in an rv park in town. Yes, more expensive but I have fast wifi, electric & water hookups, plus other amenties. I can walk to the docks and shops, too. After settling in and and hitting the Safeway grocery, where I got a 10% discount as a senior, I stopped at the LuLuBelle office to get my ticket for the cruise on Monday. The lady there told me there is a sow grizzly that often visits the salmon weir in the evening so after feeding and walking the dogs I headed over there. I never got as far as the weir, spotted some cars pulled over and sure enough, a young grizzly out on the mud flats trying to catch salmon. It was pouring but I bundled up and put the rain sleeve on my camera so I could stand out there taking photos. Found out that the old rain jacket is no longer waterproof! Got some great images of the youngster as he fished and barely managed to get back & into my truck before he came up from the flats and crossed the road. After getting a couple of shots of him on the wooded side of the road I headed along to the fish weirs. Stayed until nearly 10 pm but the sow never showed. I did get some photos of the sea lions and will get back to get more of them when it is higher tide.
There are some spectacular waterfalls maybe 12 miles outside of town and I will be going back there to try to get some images of them.
