Wickham Park campground in Melbourne, FL, is a wonderful place to use as a base for some Florida birding. Very nearby is R. Grissom Memorial Wetlands. It’s been a few years since I
spent anytime there so I decided to see if I could get a site at the campgrounds and was fortunate to get 3 nights. I spent the first day at the wetlands, spotted an otter swimming but wasn’t able to get any images of it. Lots of wading birds there, though and a few gators.
I watched a Limpkin find and eat 3 snails.
The second day I headed about an hour north to Black Point Wildlife Drive, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. So glad I did, it was teeming with birds! This is another place I haven’t been in some time so it was very rewarding to see so many in one place.
The Roseate Spoonbills are coming into bright color and it was interesting to see the masses of White Pelicans. Fascinating to see them feed as a group as they swim along. They seem to dip their heads underwater in sync then bring them up to swallow their catch and repeat it.
These are both places I hope to return to this winter.
